Annual Prize-Giving Ceremony of Our School

The prize-giving ceremony of our school was held on 2nd April in the school compound. We decorated the school building very tastefully. The function began just at 10 am with recitation from the Holy Quran. The Principal of P.N. College was in the chair. The Headmaster read out his report. Then the main ceremony began. The Headmaster called each recipient by name and the president gave away the prizes and shook him by the hands. I got two prizes. When the formal meeting came to an end, we staged a short drama to entertain the guests which was highly appreciated by the audience. This being over, the Headmaster thanked the president for the trouble he took in coming to the function. A concluding song suited to the occasion was sung by a student of class 8.

Using A Dictionary

If you want to improve your English, you must learn to use a dictionary. A dictionary helps you with the meanings of words. It also shows you the correct spelling and pronunciation of a word. To get help from a dictionary you must learn to use it first. Here are some instructions that you can follow. Read the introductory section of a dictionary. Usually, all the instructions are given in this section. If you go through the section, it will be easy for you to use the dictionary. Every dictionary uses some set of abbreviations. You must learn them carefully. Without them, it will be very difficult for you to use the dictionary. You must have a good idea about the symbols of pronunciation. Without learning them, you will not be able to pronounce a word correctly. Every dictionary follows alphabetical order. For example, the word ‘dictionary’ begins with ‘d’. So, you will find it in the section after ‘c’ and before ‘e’. Practice will make you a good user of dictionary.

Dictionary

A dictionary is a collection of words of a particular language. It lists the words of a language and gives necessary information about them. It tells us about the spelling, pronunciation, meaning, parts of speech etc. of words. To make the meanings of words clear, example sentences are given in Italics. Example sentences show how words are used. It also gives the synonym/s and the antonym/s of a word. We find words made by adding prefixes and suffixes to the root word. Parts of speech are also shown. A verb word is always given in the simple present tense. But the past form of a verb and the past participle are also shown.

My First Day At School

In 2009 I was six years old. I can remember a very important event that happened then. That was my experience about my first day at school. On that very day, my father took me to Neel Para Primary School situated in our village. He took me in the headmaster’s room. My heart beat fast. But him smiling face and gentle words put me at ease. He asked me my name. I told him my name. He was pleased with me. He told me that I was a very intelligent boy. Then he pointed to a letter chart and asked me to say some letters. I could say them all. The headmaster then called a teacher. He told him to take me to my class. I bade goodbye to my father and with the teacher I entered the classroom. He welcomed me and gave me a seat in the class room. My classmates received me warmly. I felt very happy.

A Book Shop

A book shop is a place where different kinds of textbooks or reference books are sold. It is a very important place for all educated persons. Most of the customers of the book shop are book lovers of the all ages. It is mostly familiar to the students. Generally a book shop is seen beside any educational institutions like – school, college or university. Beside them, it is also found in a stationary market place. In a book shop, there are different shelves which are nicely arranged. It is seen that the books are categorized according to the types. From a book shop, we can buy our text books, story books, novels, dictionaries, science fiction books, pens, pencils, rubbers, rulers etc. We can also get binding paper, color paper, graph paper and hand notes on different publishers. A bookseller is always available in serve the customers. A bookshop provides us with facilities to expand our knowledge. In fact, a book shop always plays an important role for the readers and mostly for the students.

No nation can advance and progress without education. It is a matter of great regret that most of the people of our country are far away from the light of education which is the prerequisite condition for the advancement of a country. Ignorance is similar to darkness. So I and some of my friends resolved that we would remove ignorance and finally we implemented our plan. We spent the whole vacation in teaching them about the necessity of god health, malnutrition, sanitation and about the scientific method of cultivation.

I am happy to learn that you are going on well with your studies. But in the letter there is no mention of your physical activities.

You know that health is wealth. A sound mind lives in a sound body. A boy of ill health can not reach his goal. So it needs no telling the importance of sound health to you. In order to maintain a sound mind, you are to keep your body fit at first and it is physical exercise which enables a student to maintain a good physique. Hard work, perseverence, punctuality, sincerity etc. are needed to cut a good figure in the examination. And this is not possible without a strong and stout body. If you fail to keep your body sound, you will lose all zest of life and then life would be dull and meaningless to you. Then you will also stumble in the way of life. A life without solid foundation of education is no life at all.

Dear Rubel

My heartiest love to you. I hope you are quite well by the grace of Almighty Allah. Now I will give you a description of a journey by train that I made in the last autumn vacation from Pabna to Dhaka. I reached the station about half an hour before the departure of the train. I was then a very busy time. Rickshaws, motor cars and other vehicles were coming to the station with passengers. After sometime hearing a whistle, the passengers stood in a queue before the ticket counter. I also stood in the line and bought a second class ticket. The right time the train came and the guard whistled and waved his flag. Everybody tried to get into the train fast. After much difficulty I got into a second class compartment. The compartment was full to its capacity. The train left the station. I looked outside and found the beauty of nature. The train was running through green paddy fields. There were jute and sugarcane plants here and there. They were tossing their heads in the breeze. The compartment presented a good scene. Some of the passengers were talking on various matters. Some were reading newspapers and magazines. Hawkers came up to us with their goods for sale. The train reached at the Dhaka Station at 9 p.m. I got down. The journey in my heart I bore. It gave me much pleasure. Indeed it was one of the most memorable days in my life.

You know every year on the occasion of Nabanna Festival a fair is held in our village. This year the festival was held as usual under the age old banyan tree situated in our village. I felt tempted to visit the fair. I went to the fair with some of my friends at 4 in the afternoon. The whole place was full of joy and busy activities. There were shops of different types. There were wooden toys, clay dolls, baloons and food items etc. in the shops. There were also seesaws, merry go-round, rope dancing there. There was also a big circus party with tigers, elephants, monkeys, horses and bears to show funny feats. I found thousand of people there. It became a meeting place of all types of people. I bought candy, dolls, flowers vase etc. from the fair. It was almost a hectic day for me. I returned home in the evening tired but happy.

Dear Salam,

I am glad to receive your letter. You have wanted to know about the picnic that we made. I am now writing about it. It was winter vacation. Our school was closed. I with some of my friends arranged a picnic. We selected Sonargaon for the picnic spot. It is some twenty miles off Dhaka. We got into the bus hired before at about 9 am with all necessary goods. After reaching Sonargaon, we finished our breakfast by 9.30 am. We did not take any cook with us. One of our friends, Anwar Hossain, has a reputation as an expert to cooking. I helped him to cooking. Some were singing, some were cutting jokes and others were playing different types of games. At about 2 pm the lunch was ready. By this time all of us became very hungry. All of us took our lunch with full appetite. After lunch we went out for sight seeing. Sonargaon is a place of historical interest. It was once the capital of Bengal. The museum of Sonargaon charmed us most. We started for home at 5 pm after taking our tea. We enjoyed the picnic most.
